14 Lessons in 14 Days

Since hopping off the plane at LAX two weeks ago, it’s been a lot of settling in and getting comfortable with a new apartment, job, and city. I can definitely say that the next time I do this…things will probably be much smoother. But I’ve definitely loved these last two weeks. They’ve already been filled with great people and wonderful memories!

Not gonna lie adulting is a massive pain sometimes…but it can be really fun too. Every day brings a new challenge and a new lesson to learn. I’m now (sadly) moving closer and closer to adulthood.

Here are a few things I’ve learned in the last two weeks, one for each day I’ve been in LA:

  1. Don’t wait until after you’ve landed in LAX to call and set up utilities…the constant announcements in the terminal make it really hard to hear the rep at the other end of the line.
  2. Google and Yelp can actually help you find a really great church (but thankfully, Yelp doesn’t do ratings for churches).
  3. Biking in the middle of the night on the side of the road is not the smartest idea.
  4. Just because the grocery store door next door is 24/7 doesn’t mean that you should be going there 24/7…
  5. Ice cream is an acceptable dinner.
  6. Mail is still a thing and should be checked more than once every two weeks…especially when utility bills get mailed to you.
  7. Ordering a Coke at a coffee shop defeats the purpose of going to a coffee shop.
  8. Meeting film executives at a coffee shop with a bottle of coke in hand may lead to some strange looks.
  9. “What’s up?” probably shouldn’t be the morning greeting of choice in an office.
  10. Watching Gordon Ramsay videos does not make you Gordon Ramsay.
  11. Double check your address before you ship packages to the apartment complex next door…
  12. Pretend to be a UCLA student to get all those discounts.
  13. Befriend UCLA students to get all those meal swipes.
  14. The best way to explore a city is to talk to the people who love it. They’ll know where to go. Thanks Mark :).

I might be smiling but don’t be fooled I was freezing. It was like 50° in the middle of the day. I don’t understand LA weather??

So What’s This Blog About?

The first of few quality photos this summer.

That’s a great question that I don’t have a good answer to. I’m spending this summer in LA so I might as well document some of my experiences while I’m here. But beyond that, I’d like to just put down some of the random thoughts that run through my head on a daily basis. I’m so quick to forget things that I think about, even the things that inspire me or really make me think. I’ve tried journaling before but it’s never amounted to more than a few pages of scattered thoughts. So here’s hoping a change in platform and audience will produce better results :).

Plus blogging is free and I’m all about saving money this summer. LA is not cheap…

Here’s a TL;DR of my summer so we’re on the same page:

  • I’m interning at two different places. The first is for an independent film/TV production company. The second is for the Downtown LA Film Festival.
  • I’m really trying to get a feel on what my future will look like and whether I would want to pursue a path in the industry or do something else…
  • All while learning how to live the adult life this summer…like remembering to pay bills and get mail
  • Got a bike and I’m using it to get everywhere. My legs better be looking good by the end of the summer.
  • Obligatory “I’m gonna get a six-pack” summer goal

Here’s a short list of what to expect:

  • Scattered thoughts on random topics (film, faith, food, fun, frickin’ politics…)
  • Some serious LA love because this city is seriously great
  • Shoddy Snapchat screenshots
  • Alliteration

What not to expect:

  • Daily posting (let’s start with low expectations please)
  • Pictures with famous people
  • If I’m gonna be honest…a six-pack

Also…expect many photos of La La Land shooting locations.
